Nutritional Assessment and Evaluation of Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients

Abstract
This study is the evaluation of nutritional status of 59 gastrointestinal cancer patients preoperatively using 7 parameters (percentage ideal body weight, triceps skinfold, mid-upper arm muscle circumference, serum albumin, serum transferrin,
total
lymphocyte count and delayed hypersensitivity skin test) and was compared with that of 34 beingn disease patients as control. The prevalence of protein-caloric malnujtrition in each parameters were as follows (percentage ideal body weight 25%;
triceps
skin fold, male 28%, female 54%; mid-upper arm muslce circumference, male 48%, female 39%; serum albumin 37%; serum transferrin 9%; total lymphocyte count 66%; delayed hypersensitivity skin test 53%). The significant parameters were percentage
ideal
body weight (p<0.05), serum albumin (p<0.05), total lymphocyte coiunt (p<0.05), and delayed hypersensitivity skin test.
The author concluded that nujtritional assessment should be done in cancer patients preoperatively and the with adequate nutritional support, the morbidity and mortality would be decreased.
